OUTCOME OF MOTILAL SINGH MASTER’S DISSERTATION SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION 2019
In June 2019, the Centre for Nepal Studies UK (CNSUK) in collaboration with Social Science Baha (SSB) had invited applicants pursuing their Master’s studies in Nepali universities to apply for a grant towards fieldwork expenses and/or the writing of dissertations.
Eighteen candidates applied for this competitive scholarship. Of them, four were shortlisted for an interview, followed by a written test organised at Social Science Baha, Kathmandu in early August. Based on the recommendation of a selection panel that comprised of representatives of the CNSUK and Social Science Baha, CNSUK has decided to award the Motilal Singh Master’s Dissertation Scholarship 2019 to:
Mr Dipak Basnet of Haramtari, Gorkha, Nepal. Mr Basnet is a Master’s student in Sustainable Development, at Kathmandu University, and will be studying cultural impacts of post-disaster housing reconstruction in, among other places, Barpak, the epicentre the 2015 earthquakes in Nepal.
The CNSUK and Social Science Baha would like to thank all the candidates for their interest and participation in this competition. We congratulate Mr. Basnet and wish him the best in his studies.
Note to editors:
- The grant consists of NPRs 50,000, and other benefits include guidance (co-supervision) by designated researcher(s) at CNSUK and/or SSB as per their specialty. A summary of the research outcomes will be published in the CNSUK’s website and or any other suitable outlets. The student will be encouraged to present a paper based on his Master’s research at the Annual Kathmandu Conference on Nepal and the Himalaya.
- This Motilal Singh Master’s Dissertation Scholarship was established in 2016 by the CNSUK to celebrate Nepali migration to the United Kingdom as well as the over two-century-long formal relationship between Nepal and Britain. The primary objective of the scholarship is to support a student studying at a Nepali university to write a well-researched and original Master’s dissertation. Dr Krishna Adhikari has been coordinating this scholarship on behalf of the CNSUK.
